Estimating home building materials for exterior walls.

Stud Estimating
To estimate the amount of material needed for exterior walls, first determine the total linear feet of exterior wall. Figure one stud for every foot, if stud spacing is 16 inches on center. This allows for the extras for corner posts, partition intersections, trimmers, door jacks, and blocking for window and doorway openings. For 24 inch spacing divide the total linear feet of wall by 2 and allow extra studs for openings, corners, and wall intersections.

Wall Plate Estimating
For wall plates multiply the total linear feet of walls by Three. (Sole or bottom plate and two top plates) Add 7 percent to this number for waste.

Header Estimating
For headers and rough sills, calculate the size of each opening. Add together the material needed for different sizes.

Wall Sheathing Estimating
First find the total area to be covered. Multiply the total feet of wall by the wall height (Remember Gables). This will give you the square feet of wall area. 4 feet by 8 feet sheets of plywood or O. S. B. is most common. Take the square feet of wall area and divide this number by 32. (4' x 8')
Add 7% for waste to this number.
